VOYAGE VERS L'IDENTITÉ

Amérindiens, noirs marron, créoles, la Guyane est un gisement de communautés qui chacune à sa manière a su puiser dans ses croyances, les repères nécessaires pour développer un mode de vie spécifique. À travers l’observation de l’une de ses ethnies, les Saramakas du village de Tampac, l’auteur Michel Montgénie plonge dans l’univers de ce peuple en se servant d’une cérémonie rituelle comme fil conducteur. Il s’agit pour lui en tant que créole d’extraire le minerai précieux enfoui dans la culture Saramaka : un savoir-faire, une interprétation du monde, un mode de vie que le temps et le regard des autres ont tendance à plonger dans l’oubli. Ce film témoigne d’une prise de conscience chez certains créoles, que la connaissance du passé sert à la construction de sa propre identité.

Guyana is a country with several communities (Ameridians, black-browns, creoles) that each one in its own way understood how to search into its beliefs, the necessary references to develop a specific way of life. Throught the observation of one these ethnic groups, the Saramakas from the Tampac village, Michel Montgénie, the author, dives into these people’s world by using a ritual ceremony as a clue. As creole, his concern is to extract the precious ores hidden in the Saramakas culture: a know-how, an interpretation of the world, a way of life which have a tendency to fall into oblivion due to the time and the lack of attention paid by the others. For some creoles, this film proves a sudden awareness that the knowledge of the past is necessary to the structure of their own identity.
